Banteay Srei
4 Nov 09, Wednesday

Broken. AnShun woke up on the second day of our trip to find his specs broken…

Anyways, Day 2 is a day for lotsa walking and we were glad that the weather’s holding up fine. We had to purchase a day pass to enter the historical sites and the drive was a long one. We enjoyed the scenery though and enjoyed chatting with our guide and driver about historical Cambodia. Our first stop was Banteay Srei and we were immediately greeted by the beautiful green rice fields.

Banteay Srei. The name Banteay Srei is of reference to beauty and women. We were informed even before arriving that the temple is well-known for its intricate and beautiful carvings. A 45 minutes drive from the entrance where we got our day passes, we finally arrived at Banteay Srei.

At first glance, Banteay Srei does not seem as majestic as many monuments are. However, upon a closer look, we began to marvel at the detailed carvings.

Banteay Srei is a temple dedicated to Shiva and was built in the 10th century. The temple was built largely out of red sandstone. There were many carvings of devatas, and scripture in Sankrit on the walls… It was truly an astounding sight.

Within the outer walls, there is also a moat. We managed to see very beautiful Lotus flowers in the moat. The guide explained that the Lotus is very important in Cambodian culture. Apart from its religious significance, the most of the different parts of a Lotus plant are also edible – making it a plant that is useful in many ways.

We continued to see many beautiful carvings in the inner buildings of Banteay Srei. Our guide continued to explain many stories depicted on the walls to us. And although the weather was hot and the sun was shining very brightly, we were not bothered as we immerse in the stories of the mythical creatures and were amazed by the beautiful carvings that surrounded us.

Before we left the location, we took one last shot at one of the ‘Lady Doors’ seen at many parts of the Temple.

This gateway is called a ‘Lady Door’ as it is just small enough for a petite Cambodian lady to walk through. Of course those were the days where women could only use certain passageways. For one thing, I definitely would have to crouch if I were to walk through one~!

Floating Village Cruise
Cultural Village
3 Nov 09, Tuesday

Floating Village. Despite the wet weather, we decided to take a trip down to see the floating village. This was the jetty where we got on a boat and started our trip.

The boat was manned by a young boy who worked part time after school. Our guide, Ke, told us that this boy earns a dollar a day.

The cruise started out well and there was only a light drizzle. We first saw a ‘floating forest’ in the waters.

The floating forest has inhabitants like birds and monkeys, and during the rainy season when the water level rises, monkeys will tend to swim across the water body and get to safer land. The unfortunate thing is if the monkey carries a baby with it, it is likely the baby would drown.

We also saw a floating church where a Korean Father reportedly lives in.

There are Vietnamese staying in the floating villages, apart from the Cambodians. The Vietnamese tended to have blue houses like this

The community relies a lot on fishing and it’s amazing how the entire community with schools, churches and restaurants is able to run on such an environment.

This is a Vietnamese School

Oh. And how to get there?

Sometimes, the simplest things make little children happy.
We finally made a short stop at a floating crocodile farm. This was where there were crocodiles bred for skin and food. The place also ran as a restaurant and had a number of souvenirs to sell. It also had some charts and pictures to introduce some of the wildlife in the area to the tourists who may come by. This was also where I met the little snake handler.

This little girl is 11 years old and is originally from Vietnam. It was really difficult for me to imagine that I was a mere 2 cm shorter than I am now when I was 12.

We also had the best shrimp ever here in the restaurant.

The shrimp was free but we had to pay for drinks. These were great and you eat everything except the head. We’d dip in in a sauce provided made with simple pepper and some lime I reckon. It was truly divine~!

We headed back to the jetty after the ride and made a trip to the sculpting school at Artisans d’Angkor. After that, we headed to the Cultural Village.

Cultural Village. AS was starting to get very confused around this point where he saw the dances in the Cultural Village. There are a lot of Balinese influences and we could hardly differentiate the culture from Thais. We managed to catch about 3 x 1/2 dances as the weather was not very kind to the dances which were held in the open.
It was also a time for boat racing and the locals managed to host some races for small boats in the man made lake in the village.

It was hilarious as the small boats were largely unstable and some teams fell into the water.
I found that there were a lot of locals in the Cultural Village, young and old alike. Many have arrived with their family to see their favorite cultural dances or cheer their favorite boating team on at the races. It seemed like this was a simple place for families to spend time together, and I truly enjoyed myself as I continued to learn more about the intriguing history of Cambodia.

That evening we had a buffet dinner with traditional Cambodian dances entertaining us. On our way back to our hotel, I saw the tall trees a distance away in the setting sun and bats hanging on the branches. It was a strangely majestic sight.

Flight. Our flight about 0800h and we had to get to the airport 2 hours earlier as always. While we walked around, we were reminded again of our girls whom we have placed in care of my mum and our dog sitter. Ahem…

The flight was a short one and we arrived in almost 2 hours after take off. I didn’t knit a stitch but played Dissidia on my PSP since there’s no flight entertainment program. Siem Reap International Airport is a very low building and wasn’t crowded at all. AnShun changed some local currency (which we later found out there was no need to) and we proceeded to meet with our guide.

Our guide, Ke, was waiting for us at the only exit for the airport. The scene somehow reminded me of my trip to Danang, Vietnam. The gray skies and light rain made me wonder why I thought it was going to be hot in the first place. I was expecting a little van or bus, and was hoping that I would not find the other members of the tour group annoying. But lo and behold, the other members of my tour group were AS, our guide, and our driver.

Silk Farm. Our first destination very quickly after we touched down was a silk farm in Siem Reap. Ke shared that our schedule that day isn’t too bad for wet weather since most of it would be sheltered areas. We took a 15 to 20 minutes ride to the silk farm and through the wet windows of the car, I looked around the town as much as I could while listening to Ke telling us little things about his country.

At the silk farm, we were first given a very short tour of the silk weaving process and its importance in the traditional Cambodian attire. The silk farm has its own mulberry plants and dyes the silk naturally. After that, we were ushered to the area where silk was harvested.

The lady in the background is the first person we see in the long process of creating silk cloth for garments. She is preparing the mulberry leaves by cutting them into small pieces, and then feeding them to the silk worms that are in the tray. Those teeny 2-cm caterpillars would then grow into these 2-inch long larvae.

When they are mature, they would spin their cocoons and then transform into silkmoths. The silk in Cambodia is naturally yellow, and you can see its rich and natural color in the picture of the cocoons here.

When the moths have flown off and the cocoons are left behind, workers harvest the cocoons for its silk by boiling them in water.

The three ladies are spinning the silk and they are in different weights. The lady in the foreground is spinning the lightest weight silk while the one furthest is spinning the heaviest weight. Some of the silk would then be dyed a different color and most are prepared for weaving. To create an image on the fabric, the silk threads would first be prepared by dyeing the correct colors at particular areas. These ladies are preparing the silk threads to be dyed for the creation of the image on the left.

This is a more complex pattern and the image is on the right.

The next step after the dyeing is done would be the weaving.

It’s a lot of hardwork, but the place was an enjoyable stop for a crafter like me. The looms and thread and silk, and it’s beautiful colors… yum!! I bought a bag from the store but took every chance I had to ask if the skeins of silk on display were for sale throughout my whole trip. Everyone thought it was the strangest thing they have heard. @_@

Lunch. We went for lunch after that. The venue was a Chinese restaurant at a 5 story building. Unlike the restaurants here, the one we went to was quiet and didn’t have customers. In fact we thought it was closed. We were shown to a VIP room with 2 tables. We took one and there was a couple of Japanese tourists at the other. The skies cleared up a little during our lunch and we had Angkor beer for the first time in our lives. We loved it!

After lunch, we went on a boat ride to the Tonle Sap…

I thought I’d pen a few words before I blog about this trip. I’m still at Phnom Penh and am waiting for the flight home. This trip has been eye-opening. This place is so full of history and so rich with culture that I am happy to find this gem before it becomes too commercialized. I think there are so many places out there that I have not yet discovered. Having already travelled to France, Holland, Belgium, Hawaii, and Maldives at this age, I’m glad I made a trip here. While I have already been to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Cebu and Danang, as well as many parts of Malaysia, this trip has reminded me how little I know of Asia.

I miss the girls and miss watching anime as and when I like. I miss having the internet at my fingertips. I also miss the daily grind, strangely. But there is nothing I would give to forfeit this experience.

See you all back home.

For four mornings, we were greeted by the beautiful dawn and the cyan blue seas. I admit this trip has been unexpected in many senses. We didn’t exactly plan for this trip, and AS simply texted me one afternoon to say ‘Shall we go for a trip in September?’ We also didn’t really know where to go. There were so many places shortlisted, from Bhutan to Egypt, Tibet to Russia. When we met to go to the travel agency, AS said ‘You know, my friend was telling me about Maldives. He said it’s really nice.’

I said I heard of its beauty too but I’m not sure what we’d do there.

As if it was a huge hint (a very big one), a large poster greeted us when we entered the travel agency. It had the bluest seas and charming huts out at sea, and it coaxed us with the word ‘Maldives’. We still asked about all our other destinations. But I think we both decided, independently, eventually and secretly, that we wanted a relaxing trip.

On day four of our trip, we were set out to enjoy the beach, the sun, the pool and the sea breeze. It was an entire day of relaxation since we were only set to leave at night. I think it had been a wonderful four days, and it had been a good break for both of us. Although we still had the same thoughts about work and all, I’m glad it was a vacation. I suppose everyone of us would need to unwind once in awhile.

I’m also happy to have so many more beautiful memories the two of us share. I think, sometimes we each get so caught up with our own work, and weekends become so routine, that we live each day like clockwork. Sure there are the little things that we know, appreciate and remember, but once in awhile, it’s always nice to have something new

We will definitely remember the swim with the Manta. And in addition to it, the coral reefs and the colorful fish for me. We’ll remember the dolphins we saw, as they moved through the waves in the morning sea.

We will never forget how I fed the fish all evening during fishing, how AS caught a little fish, and how I *almost* caught a tuna. These amusing things we save as stories now for the three Ms and next time who knows.

We will always remember the beautiful sunrise and sunset and the bright fullmoon. And of course, we will never forget being surrounded by the bright evening stars, with nothing around us but the darkness and the soft sounds of the waves in the background.

I would really love to return to this paradise and live again so close to nature, within the beauty of God’s work. Yet, there are still so many places we want to see together and the list is getting longer and longer. So although soon is nice, I really have no idea when we could be back again.

Back home, we looked through our pictures over and over again. So many of them are so beautiful, yet we were glad that we had the opportunity to experience it and live it. This picture eventually became a favorite of ours.

This is going to be a short entry but I thought I’d just talk a little about the local island we visited on Day 3 of our trip. As usual we woke up to a beautiful dawn.

This was a day we wanted to spend leisurely – as if the fishing days weren’t leisurely enough but I mean, we could choose to either fill the day with strenous water sports like wind surfing or something, or just have a laid back day and lounge at the beach. We thought we would be going to the Local Island in the morning and have the Dolphin Safari in the evening. In the end, I decided we didn’t have to go for Dolphin Safari. After all, we saw the dolphins the day before and it was a beautiful sight. Moreover we didn’t have to crowd around the boat and take pictures no one can see. The memory of the dolphins was wonderful and was good enough for me.

The Maldivians are Sunni Muslims. So in order to respect their culture, we had to dress appropriately when visiting the local islands or the City of Male. We took a boat ride for about 30 minutes and arrived at this very desolated island. I couldn’t remember the name of the island now, but this was what greeted us when we arrived.

There are signs of a community no doubt. But it was really very quiet. You can see the white banners in the photo above. They seem to be some political outbursts of sorts, depicting in both Maldivian and English that ‘there is a need for change’.

Many parts of the island were under construction and they seem to be building a lot of residential homes. Most of where we went to looked like this.

Since it was the month of Ramadan, most of the people were indoors resting, or they were out lounging of makeshift ‘chairs’ like these.

We walked around a lot and there were only a handful of people. Here we are at the mosque, which was also empty.

We didn’t see much while walking around but we heard the primary school kids singing the school song during assembly. We also saw a couple of carpenters who were quite amused by tourists and one of them used his hp to take a photo of us! All around we saw signs of a community like a soccer field with fresh scores from the weekend before, political banners, schools, shops, a mosque and all that. But we hardly saw anyone. After more walking around, we saw this little kid playing with cards on his own. He wasn’t shy and didn’t run away. But he didn’t want to look up either.

Here’s AS with our guide

He’s the same guide who took us night fishing. After the visit to the local island, we realized that not everyone was as fortunate as our guide or his other colleagues in the resort to have a good job. This guide had a ’surfer dude’ friend (named by yours truly so because he really looked like one!) on the local island who has a gift shop. The whole island was so quiet and had only a handful of shops operating. These are the shops that catered for the locals and occasionally the tourists who needed a drink or something. The shelves are almost bare and have only ten or less of each product. Most of the other shops which were open were the tourist gift shops, one of which owned by the friend of our guide. Looking at how little visitors there are, we wondered how they actually make a living.

AS took a picture of this on one part of the island.

It was really different from the resort islands of Maldives. I didn’t go to Male and don’t know what the city is like but from what I hear, it seems much more different what what we’ve seen in the local islands. The heartening thing I guess is that schools are provided for even in these quiet little islands. So young children still get basic education even though they may not live in the city center. Looking at the seas near our resort and looking at the ‘beaches’ of the local island, I can’t help but feel very fortunate.

On another note, to remember our trip and our swim with the Manta, AS and I bought ourselves these Manta Ray pendants from the friend of our guide.

In my first entry about our trip, I did mention I’d talk about the villa we stayed in. There are generally three kinds of accomodation we had to make a choice amongst, and they are Land Villas, Water Villa and the Jacuzzi Water Villa. AS loves Jacuzzis for some reason and I like the idea of a deck. But initially I thought a normal land villa would suffice, since I’m no swimmer.

In the end we decided to go to the Jacuzzi Water Villa. AS said it’s not THAT much difference in price as compared to the Water Villa which he wanted to stay in. In a way we chose our resort based on the availability of the Jacuzzi Water Villa. The other 4* resorts didn’t have anything like that. (Or rather the tour agency didn’t offer anything even if they did perhaps because they were too new or something)

So here is an aerial view of our resort and we stay on the curve at the right, just where the central walkway is. (this is taken from the official site)

The tip of the leaf-shaped cluster of resort are the presidential suites and honeymoon suites. The Presidential suites can accomodate up to 4 persons instead of the usual 2. On the right of the above picture are the Water Villas. We’re not sure if they have jacuzzis but I thought they didn’t. Here’s a picture of them from my Villa’s deck.

And here’s the route we always take to our villa. Ours would be on the left of the roundabout. If you noticed, there’s a hut in the middle of the cluster. That’s where the cleaning guys are (nope, not cleaning ladies).

If you note, each villa has ‘two roofs’. Actually one belongs to the bedroom and the other is the bathroom. The deck is adjoined between the two so you have access to the deck from both the bed and bath rooms. The bedroom is a simple with with an airconditioner, as well as a ceiling fan, a sofa, tea table, bedside tables, a desk, tea and cups and glass and of course a tv and a cd player too. It’s just nice and everything is ‘within reach’. I really felt more ready to go out and hit the beach while staying here than anywhere else because really, everything is just ‘within reach’. Here you can see a picture of our villa taken in the morning some meters away from the deck.

The villas are constructed in such a way that you won’t be able to peep at your neighbor.

The only way you can do that I guess is when you’re canoeing out at sea and usually the canoeists (?) would be out in the late afternoons. So my take is, if you want to sunbathe on your deck nude, please remember people canoe around that time.

Oh and how do we sunbathe? There are deck chairs on the deck, and there’s also another table, and two proper chairs. We had one of our lunches there – on the third day i think.

To be honest I didn’t really sunbathe. I only sat in the pool long enough to be darkened enough so that i have a ‘hi-i-just-had-a-beach-holiday’ look.

Here’s another look from the deck of our villa

We can really see the sun rise, see the sun set, the waves… see the moon glowing over the waves…

AND the Jacuzzi. AS likes to sit in it and read in the early mornings and late afternoons. While yours truly prefers the night so that I can see sights like the above picture. It’s amazing how the moonlight highlights the waves coming from afar and even though it’s too dark to read, I sit mesmerized by the sight. I must add that the skies in Maldives are awfully clear and you can see so many stars you start to wonder if you’re in space. If you happen to be at the jetty in the night, you really feel like you’re enclosed in a cavern of stars.

Anyways, we really spent enough time reading – something we couldn’t really afford to do so much back home. Initially I wanted to show you this picture to tell you how we enjoyed reading at the deck, and enjoying the sea breeze, and also the funny incident involving us having a very loud conversation about the book AS was reading and not knowing that there was a guest next door trying to fish – obviously we scared the fishes away. …. – but…

Just look at the clouds.

Tuesday 16 September 2008

We woke up early for trolling fishing. This is different from sunset fishing the night before and we are looking for much bigger fish. Usually this has to be much earlier in the morning but we set out around 7am. The skies are still rather dark but we could see sunlight peeking through the clouds.

There were only three participants in this fishing trip. Us and the fishing enthusiast from South Africa. He’s such a quiet man and seems to know so much about fishing that we thought he came solely to fish. It was only much later we realized he did come with his partner. Anyways AS and I enjoyed the morning breeze and waited for it to be brighter before we could take more pictures. Here’s our crew for the day.

And here’s the bait for trolling fishing. It’s much larger and longer, and has a fly. The hook is also very much larger than the one during Sunset fishing.

This is then attached to a very long fishing line and dropped into the waters. The fishing line has a thin rope attached, and we just hold onto it and wait for a fish. In the meantime the boat will continue moving so I think the bait would resemble a small swimming fish in the deep water.

OH when we just settled down with our fishing lines, we spotted dolphins again!! There were quite a few of them (much more than on the first day) and I think the waters were still cool enough so they were jumping out of the water just like we see on Animal Planet or something. Unfortunately by the time we got hold of our camera, all we caught was a fin. Can you see it? (You might not since the picture here is small)

But at least we saw it and it was a sight worth remembering.

We had breakfast on the boat while waiting for fish. First we had some coffee and some snacks. And then we were served an array of pastries from the kitchen.

Trolling fishing is interesting because we get to see the beautiful sights in open waters early in the morning. I love the breeze and the waves as well.

But as everyone knows, fishing requires a lot of patience and so there were long periods of time where we had nothing to do. AS decided to sit and wait at the side of the boat and have the running water at his feet…

While I started to take random photos…

Awhile later, I ran out of subjects to shoot. So I just sat and watched the water. It was a very dark navy blue and the waves were very calming despite the boat’s speed. I just stared and stared and thought to myself… Are there any fish in there? Maybe there aren’t….

And suddenly, as if in response to my question, I felt a huge tug on my line.

Initially I thought it was a huge wave, but this one was relentless. I stood up immediately and held on to the post of the ship about 1.5m away from where I was sitting. And then in my raspy voice (I had a cough) I said ‘Fish? I think it’s a fish!’

At first AS looked at me like ‘huh? A fish? did you say a fish?’

And the rest of the crew came running to help.

At first we were all skeptical because when they asked ‘Is it a fish?’ I said ‘I dunno. I think so.’ Probably due to the lack of fruitful results during the Sunset fishing the night before, I was almost certain the hook will be empty again. But one of the crew members took over my line and tugged at it. Then he nodded his head and said ‘Yes! Fish!’

With that he passed the line to another member, and went to get something. We were all pulling in the line and in my heart I kept thinking the fish has already escaped. But everytime I thought that, there was a strong tug on the line again.

So we were happily pulling and pulling and I saw the first crew member wielding this giant hook. I realized that he had to hook out the fish when it’s near enough the boat.

Suddenly everyone yelled and was very excited; Apparently the fish was just next to the boat and was BIG!!!! We could feel more tension on the line and the crew with the giant hook was all ready to catch the fish.

…. lo and behold, the fish was so near the boat and it gave a final desparate struggle… it pulled unto the line so tightly and in this process, all of us holding the line had cuts.

AND it got away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

It was such a disappointment and I DIDN’T EVEN SEE THE FISH!!!!

It was allegedly at least 1.5 meters and had silver and gold/metallic green scales. We were able to identify it as a Yellowfin Tuna later.

(@#$&*#&%)

So here are two of the few fishers who battled with the fish

Although it was disappointing that the fish got away, I was glad I even managed to catch something (in a way). At least now I now what it’s like to be reeling something in! We continued fishing for another hour or so, and the boat went around searching for possibly fishing spots (like looking for birds and going to areas where the big fishes jump out of the water), but it turned out that my escapee was the only one to take the bait that morning. It was good fun though and we want to do this again sometime. This would be one story we’d be telling for a long long time!

Monday 15 September 2008

Our meal program with the resort was half-board. Which means we had to get our own lunch if we wanted any. It was not a bad plan because I think there are some days we decided we would like to stay in the villa or go to the beach or lounge at the pool.

Anyways we went to the Dhoni Bar which was nearest after we leave the villas and it has a gorgeous pool in it. Since we planned to go Sunset Fishing later in the evening, we thought we’d just read at the pool and have a simple lunch. I decided it couldn’t be a better time to knit the project I had brought along for this trip.

So Sunset Fishing happens before dinner (Dinner time is 8pm since it’s Ramadan) and initially I told AS I wanted to wear a sundress. Then he said it’s a bit weird wearing a sundress for fishing isn’t it. Well, I guess. – I thought. My main point was that I wanted to wear those sundresses for dinner. Anyways in the end I wore shorts and another bikini and thought he was absolutely right.

I brought up the thing about the sundress because well, sundresses are quite common isn’t it? Even poupeegirl has sundresses for the beach event. But it’s a little weird for fishing I will admit. What happened was there was this person, from the milk-incident country, wearing not a sundress but a short dress with a poufy skirt to the fishing event. She had these huge poseur plastic sunglasses and wedge platform heels. And then she made her nerdy boyfriend take pictures of her on the boat with the wind blowing, in various poses. AS muttered to me ‘now don’t you think that looks really stupid’.

I can’t help but laugh in my heart because my face was too busy displaying disgust at her behavior. (*we later met other tourists from the same country but they were very much different. Perhaps because they were from different cities and were more matured)

Anyways back to the fishing trip. It was fascinating watching the crew.

We were supposed to look for a good place to anchor and then do our fishing from there. Here are the guides preparing to anchor.

It was windy and the view was fantastic by the way.

For sunset fishing, we were each provided with a simple line and hook. The bait is small and is dropped all the way to the bottom of the seabed (which isn’t very low in the selected fishing area, probably around 3meters). There’s also a weight attached near the bait so it pulls down the bait to the bottom of the sea.

There were 9 of us on the boat excluding the guides/crew. The ridiculous photo-taking couple, two couples from Japan, and an enthusiast from South Africa who brought his own rod. The guides helped prepare our lines and put the baits on the hook, and explained that all we needed to do was to put the hook in the water and wait for some fish to get baited. Then we just have to pull up the line.

Sounds easy right?

The Japanese couple and the photo-taking couple were at one side of the boat, while the SA enthusiast, one of the guides, as well as AS and myself were on the other. The first to catch a fish was unfortunately the girl in the costume. She caught a little yellow fish, which we later learned was known locally as a Banana fish.

Actually once I dropped the bait in the water, I felt fish eating the bait. But when I pull it up, it’s either too fast or too slow, there’s nothing left but a hook. And later, I was convinced that our side of the boat doesn’t have fish since the Japanese couples became superb fishers in awhile. One of them even caught a red snapper!

Of course I was proven wrong because the SA fish enthusiast caught some fish, and the guide – oh boy. He takes three seconds to catch a fish.

He literally drops the bait into the water, waits a few seconds, pull up his line and there’s a fish at the end of the line.

AS and I decided, maybe we were fated to feed the fish. And at that moment. He caught a Banana fish too.

That’s it. I’m the fish-feeder for the night. (Little did I know that the tables would be turned the next day though)

We stopped when everyone ran out of bait. And the last fish caught was by the same man who caught the Red Snapper. He caught a fish about 50cm long!! Here it is with the other little things.

Most of the fish there were Banana Fish and what the locals call Job Fish. The biggest catch was also a Job fish I think and it was huge. AS and I later realize that the Job Fish was the one we see very often in the waters during the day, just before noon. There were always schools of them around in the shallow waters.

Everyone was given something to take back at the end of the event. Even people like us who caught a single Banana Fish. I guess they just wanted it to be a fun event for all of us, and everyone could go back with something. The fishes would be kept for the next day and would be served either for lunch or dinner.

By the time we ended it was dark and the moon could be seen glowing in the night sky.

It was certainly a fun event for us to remember and we certainly looked forward to the fishing outing the next day!

We left on Sunday last week and was scheduled to arrive just before midnight at Olhuveli Resort in Maldives after the transfer. But we had to change planes before we departed so we were delayed for an hour. Anyways after we changed aircrafts, we ended up in this plane near a Hello Kitty Plane. Now I’m not a fan of the mouthless feline but I have read about the Eva Air Hello Kitty plane via email. And I heard from Pat that they have a special boarding area in the airport for the flight (and of course there are HK decorations all over in that special boarding area). So when AS and I saw the Hello Kitty plane just a few lanes away from us, it was quite a surprise. Now we know that the Hello Kitty plane touches down in Changi Airport too.

Hehe it’s so amusing really.

Well we were really late arriving at our Maldivian resort so it was already after midnight. It was really dark but we could already see the clear waters surrounding the island. There were also a few stingrays swimming around once we arrived and even though I was so tired, I was quite excited seeing these creatures so close by. Maldives is GMT+5 but our resort actually chose to follow the GMT +4 timing (or was it +6…hmm) My point is, this place is so much like a little world on its own that it even chooses to follow it’s own timing!

I watched Indiana Jones on the flight and only slept a little. By the time we both unpacked our bags, AS had already fallen asleep and I casted on my project for the holiday. I couldn’t really sleep but in less than an hour I was snoozing away.

* * *

Monday Morning, 15 September 2008

We woke up really early. It probably was a combination of jetlag and the beautiful sunlight streaming in from outdoors. Our bed in the Villa is facing full length glass doors and we were surrounded by the sea beyond our deck. The jacuzzi is outside and there was also a table with two chairs for meals, as well as two deck chairs for the sun-worshippers.

We could take a few steps and literally walk into the sea and swim with the fishes if we wanted too.

Well anyways more about the Villa later.

We took the oppotunity to check the events available for the day before going for breakfast. We planned out the stuff we wanted to take part in and signed up for the snorkelling excursion for the day.

Snorkelling is a first for me and I was quite excited. For the first dive, the reef was very shallow. So in order not to hurt the corals, we had to slowly climb off the boat. Initially I wasn’t very comfortable with the snorkelling mask and couldn’t see anything. But once I got the hang of it, I was ecstatic! It’s amazing to see the beautiful corals just below within 2 meters from me. There were some fishes swimming around and it was really beautiful. I think if I went any closer I would hyper ventilate. -_-

But such is the beauty of the works of God.

The second reef we went to was much deeper so we could jump off the boat if we wanted to. Did I do it? Of course! And I am victorious. (what game is this, that yells ‘You are VICTORIOUS’) Hey for someone who doesn’t swim very much, this isn’t too bad.

And here’s just a pixel of what we saw

When we were off to our third reef, we saw some dolphins (i yelled ‘SHARK!’ at first, doh! -_-) and there was allegedly a sea turtle who was probably a ninja since it disappeared within a nanosecond.

Then our guide informed us that there was a manta ray nearby, so the boat stopped near it and we jumped into the water to catch a glimpse. It was rather far away from me so all I saw was a black shadow. It was really exciting though but we had to get out of the water and make our way to the third reef. We did our dive at the third reef which was also beautiful but upon returning to the boat, the guide spotted the manta rays again.

So of course we all jumped into the water. This time there were about 5 of them and they happened to be just behind me! Everyone was so excited and it was indeed a ’safari’ since we all swam after the manta as fast as we could.

They were really gentle giants of the ocean that when they swim, the waters are actually rather calm. Unlike the prancing dolphins, they were just swooping around us with their mighty ‘wings’. Watching them is like watching time go by in slow motion!

We really enjoyed the Snorkelling Safari and I really appreciated that the guides emphasized time and again about preserving the reefs. Being so close to nature and having the opportunity to experience the beauty of it was awesome. I really want to swim better now so that I can go deeper into the water (provided I don’t get all excited hahaaha) in future. This is definitely something AS and I look forward to doing again in future.

With our guide. He was really fun to chat with and was experienced with the waters.
